Build WARREDOC, University for Foreigners of Perugia

WARREDOC — Water Resources Research Platform

Web development for the Water Resources Research & Documentation Centre at the University for Foreigners of Perugia — enabling data analysis, research publication, and international collaboration.

The Challenge

WARREDOC — the Water Resources Research & Documentation Centre at the University for Foreigners of Perugia — needed a digital platform that could support its research mission: documenting, analysing, and publishing work on water resources, and facilitating collaboration with national and international partners.

Academic research platforms have specific requirements that generic website builders don’t address well: data visualisation of research findings, publication management, multilingual content for international audiences, and tools for collaborative research workflows.

The Approach

We developed several web platforms for WARREDOC, working with the research team to understand how the platform would support their actual workflows. Key work included:

  • Building the research platform with appropriate content management for academic publication workflows
  • Data visualisation and GIS mapping components for presenting water resources research findings clearly
  • Research documentation and archiving functionality
  • Multilingual content support for WARREDOC’s international audience and collaborative partners
  • Optimising for accessibility and academic discoverability (appropriate metadata, structured content)

The platform needed to serve two distinct audiences: researchers uploading and managing content, and external visitors — including international collaborators and the general public — consuming the research output.

The Outcome

  • Platform live at warredoc-unistrapg.org
  • Deployed platforms for external partners like ISPRA (Italian National Institute for Environmental Research)
  • Research publication and documentation workflows operational
  • Data and map visualisation of research findings accessible to international audience
  • Platform supporting WARREDOC’s ongoing research and collaboration activities

About this engagement

This was a Build engagement: creating a purposeful research platform for an academic institution. The measure of success was whether it genuinely supported the researchers’ work — and that required understanding the academic context as well as the technical requirements.
